Frosty wings leave Pirates

GREENVILLE — Sophomore
post players John Fields and Gabe Blair did their best to offset East
Carolina's cold outside shooting but it wasn't enough in a 71-67 loss to
UNC Wilmington in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday night.
Fields had a career high
26 points on 13 of 17 shooting from the floor. Blair added 13 points and
a game-high 11 rebounds for ECU (4-6).
"If you had told me our
two wing guards (Sam Hinnant and Cory Farmer) would go a combined
1-for-15, I wouldn't have thought it would be a close game," said ECU
coach Mack McCarthy.
Although UNCW (8-4) shot
50 percent from the floor (25-50), 50 percent behind the arc (7-14) and
82.4 percent at the foul line (14-17), the Pirates hoisted a pair of
3-point attempts in the final seconds that would have tied the score.
Hinnant and Darrell Jenkins both missed.
Todd Hendley rebounded for
the Seahawks with 5.1 seconds left. Hendley was fouled and made his
first free throw to seal the win. Hendley totaled 15 points and nine
rebounds.
Daniel Fountain had 16
points to lead UNCW and combined with T.J. Carter to put the defensive
clamps on Hinnant, who had a career high 30 points in ECU's last game, a
75-69 win over N.C. State on Dec. 8.
ECU will host Lee
University, an NAIA team from Cleveland, TN, at 7 p.m. on Dec. 29.
