Series was played in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1947. The CWS moved to Wichita,
Kan., in 1949.
Former President George H.W.
Bush was captain of the Yale team that played in the 1948 CWS.
Total attendance in 1950,
the first year the tournament was played in Omaha, was 17,805. Attendance in
2003 was a record 260,091.
Before this
year, the largest crowd for a
College World Series game was 26,327 for Texas' 13-2 win over Miami on June
14, 2003.
Aluminum bats and the
designated hitter debuted in the College World Series in 1974.
More than 11 million
households and 29 million Americans watched some of the 45-plus hours of
national coverage of the tournament last year.
Texas has made a record 31
appearances in the College World Series.
Southern California has won
a record 12 national championships, most recently in 1998.
