By The Associated Press

— Juan Dixon, Maryland, scored 29 points — including 20 in the first half — as the Terrapins cruised past Siena 85-70 in the East Regional.

SHOT OF THE DAY

Creighton's Terrell Taylor hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to give the 12th-seeded Blue Jays an 83-82 double-overtime upset of fifth-seeded Florida in the Midwest Regional.

DOMINANT PERFORMANCE

Illinois shot 59 percent from the field and outrebounded San Diego State 41-26 in a 93-64 victory in the Midwest Regional.

TAKING CHARGE

Cincinnati's Steve Logan outscored the entire Boston University team 23-16 in the first half of the Bearcats' 90-52 rout in the West Regional. Logan finished with 27 points in 27 minutes.

KNIGHT FALLS EARLY

Texas Tech's 76-68 loss to Southern Illinois in the East Regional sent coach Bob Knight to his fifth first-round loss in his last seven NCAA appearances.

LUCKY 12s

Creighton's 83-82 double-overtime victory over Florida continued a good showing by No. 12 seeds. With Missouri's victory over Miami, and Tulsa's upset of Marquette — both Thursday — this is the first time that three No. 12s have won first-round games in an NCAA tournament.

SEEDY SITUATION

UCLA's 80-58 victory over Mississippi in the West Regional gave No. 8 seeds a sweep of No. 9 seeds. Wisconsin beat St. John's earlier Friday, and Notre Dame beat Charlotte and Stanford topped Western Kentucky on Thursday. The No. 8 seeds swept the No. 9 seeds in 2000, while the No. 9s swept in 1999 and 2001.

CLOSE CALL

Hampton, a No. 15 seed trying to pull off a major upset for the second straight year, was within four points of second-seeded Connecticut 71-67 with 3:08 to play. But the Huskies scored the final seven points. The Pirates beat
Iowa State last season to become just the fourth 15th seed to win a first-round game.

STREAKS

— Michigan State's 69-58 loss to North Carolina State in the East Regional ended the Spartans' run of three straight Final Four appearances, including the 2000 national championship.

— Central Connecticut State's 19-game winning streak was stopped with a 71-54 loss to Pittsburgh in the South Regional.

SWINGS

North Carolina State shot 25 percent in the first half and 67 percent in the second to rally from a 12-point halftime deficit against Michigan State and win its first NCAA tournament game in 11 years, 69-58 in the East Regional.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

— ``I call him the Einstein of point guards. I coached a couple of good ones — John Stockton and Brian Shaw — and he's right in their league. Great players make great plays, and when we needed him to, he made great plays.'' —  Pittsburgh coach Ben Howland, on Panthers point guard Brandin Knight, who had 17 points and five steals in a 71-54 victory over Central Connecticut State in the South Regional.

— ``You always feel pressure. What do you say if you lose a game like that, and the No. 1 seed? `I'm going to Mexico?' You don't say, `I'm going to Disneyland,' I know that.'' — Maryland coach Gary Williams on being a top seed playing a No. 16 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Terrapins beat Siena 85-70 in the East Regional.
