CBS Already a Tournament Winner
By The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — CBS doesn't need a string of upsets for big overnight
ratings in the NCAA tournament. Viewership was up about 22 percent from 2001
for Friday's games, all won by favorites.
The first window Friday drew a 7.1 overnight rating, 11 percent higher
than last year. That early telecast included No. 2-seeded Oregon beating No.
6 Texas in the Midwest Regional, and No. 2-seeded UConn defeating No. 11
Southern Illinois in the East.
The night's second block of games had an 8.3 overnight rating, 34 percent
better than in 2001. Those games were No. 1 Maryland topping No. 4 Kentucky
in the East, and No. 1 Kansas over Illinois in the Midwest.
The overnight ratings through six days of tournament play averaged a 6.2
— 13 percent higher than last year. The national rating through five days,
though, was 5.5, the same as in 2001.
Each national rating point represents nearly 1.06 million TV homes.
Overnight ratings measure the 53 largest TV markets in the United States,
covering about 65 percent of the country.
The last two NCAA tournaments finished with the lowest ratings in the 20
years that CBS has televised the event, with the 2{-week average rating of
6.5 in 2001 up slightly from 2000's overall average of 6.4.
