CBS finalizes war contingency plans for tournament
NEW YORK (AP) — CBS has firmed up war contingency plans to televise NCAA
tournament games on cable networks if it goes to full-time news coverage of
the war with Iraq.
The war was initiated Wednesday night with strikes on
targets in Baghdad by cruise missiles and aircraft launched from a coalition
of forces led by the United States and Britain.
NCAA officials had announced earlier that the games
would go on as scheduled in the event war broke out.
CBS would not detail where the games would be moving, but
network spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said viewers will be informed if
contingency plans are needed.
``They will not be on their own,'' Wade said Wednesday.
CBS' parent company, Viacom, owns several cable networks,
including TNN, Nickelodeon, VH1 and MTV.
However, it's most likely the games will be moved to ESPN
and ESPN2, if necessary. Unlike the Viacom cable networks, the all-sports
network has the ability to show different games in different regions of the
country.
