Curry Says Yes to Football, No to Hoops

CHAPEL HILL
(AP) — North Carolina quarterback Ronald Curry has decided to concentrate on
a pro football career and will not play basketball this season.
North
Carolina coach Matt Doherty had tried to talk Curry into rejoining the
basketball team following the football season. But the athletic department
said Friday that Curry won't return and is expected to choose an agent
within the next couple of weeks.
North
Carolina opened the season 0-3 — its worst start since 1928 — with home
losses to Hampton and Davidson. The Tar Heels are 5-7 after allowing the
most points in school history in a 112-79 loss to Maryland on Wednesday.
Earlier this
week, forward Julius Peppers declared himself eligible for the NFL draft and
said he isn't going to play basketball this season.
Curry, of
Hampton, VA, averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 assists in 54 games over two
seasons. He joined the basketball team after the football season last year
and helped the Tar Heels earn a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference
regular season title.
Curry was a
four-year starter on the football team and leaves as the school's career
leader in total offense, passing yards, rushing yards by a quarterback and
rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
Curry threw
for 1,005 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 253 yards and three
touchdowns his senior season. North Carolina went 8-5 and Curry was named
MVP of the Peach Bowl after the Tar Heels beat Auburn 16-10.
