GREENVILLE (AP) — Art Brown rushed for 161 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead East Carolina over Army 59-24 on Saturday.

The win improved the Pirates (2-3) to 2-0 in Conference USA, putting them in a tie with Southern Miss atop the standings.

Aris Comeaux had two touchdowns for Army (0-5, 0-3), which fell to 0-6 against the Pirates.

East Carolina scored 21 first-quarter points and jumped to a 38-17 halftime lead. The Black Knights didn't get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Brown rushed nine times for 87 yards with touchdown runs of 1 and 31 yards in the first half. He also had a 2-yard TD reception from Paul Troth in the second quarter to give East Carolina a 28-3 edge.

He scored his fourth touchdown on a 17-yard run down the left side early in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates got solid play from their special teams, which set the Pirates up with excellent field position several times. East Carolina had three returns of 22 yards or more in the second quarter alone, giving the ball to the Pirates near midfield or better.

Marvin Townes had a 45-yard kickoff return after Army's first touchdown, and Terrance Copper had a 76-yard punt return. Both led to touchdown drives.

Even when things went well for Army, which scored two second-quarter touchdowns, the Pirates scored on the ensuing drives to prevent the Black Knights from building any momentum.

The Pirates' defense forced a fumble by William White on Army's second play, giving the ball to East Carolina at the Army 31-yard line. The Pirates needed just three plays to put the ball into the end zone, ending with Townes' 1-yard run.

Army scored on a 29-yard field goal by Paul Stelzer on its next drive. But the Pirates intercepted Silva on the Black Knights' next drive, and eventually scored on Brown's 1-yard run.

The Pirates added a 49-yard touchdown pass from Troth to Richard Alston as time expired in the first quarter for a 21-3 lead.

Army found the end zone late in the second quarter, getting a 15-yard pass from running back Marcellus Chapman to Comeaux, pulling the Black Knights to 28-10. It was only the second touchdown scored by Army's offense in its last 15 quarters.

East Carolina answered with Townes' return, giving the Pirates the ball at Army's 46. Brown did the rest, rushing twice and ending the drive with the 31-yard score.

Army pulled to 35-17 on Comeaux's 84-yard punt return for a touchdown with 56 seconds left in the first half. But East Carolina scored on a 46-yard field goal by Kevin Miller as the half ended.
