The fourth-ranked Bearcats (19-1, 7-0) have the nation's longest current
winning streak at 19 games and lead the American Division by one game over
Charlotte and Marquette. Cincinnati will start a three-game road trip
Saturday at Marquette before moving on to No. 24 Wake Forest and Charlotte.
Coach Bob Huggins' team withstood a challenge at South Florida on
Saturday, emerging with a 78-68 triumph behind 27 points from Steve Logan
and a season-high 18 from freshman Jason Maxiell. Logan, who was named
Conference USA player of the week, can tie a school record with his 100th
victory as a player should the Bearcats win Tuesday.
``Logan is Logan,'' Huggins said of his senior guard, who is averaging 22
points and is a front-runner for Conference USA player of the year honors.
``Logan is the best player in the league, and wins games like the best
player in the league is supposed to do.''
A win would mark Huggins' 11th consecutive 20-win season at Cincinnati,
where he is 320-97 (.767) in 13 seasons.
East Carolina (7-12, 1-6) continues to have a rough go of it in its first
season in Conference USA. The Pirates have lost three straight since their
surprising home win over Louisville, and are coming off an 87-52 setback at
Charlotte on Saturday.
Gabe Mikulas had 12 points and eight rebounds for East Carolina, which
shot just 2-for-24 from 3-point range.
The Pirates have struggled in their last three games from the perimeter,
hitting just 18 percent (11-for-61) from behind the arc.
Forward Erroyl Bing has been the Pirates' most valuable player, averaging
team-highs of 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds. He had 17 points and six
rebounds in the first meeting between the teams, a 72-62 Cincinnati win at
East Carolina on Jan. 5.
In what was ECU's inaugural game as a C-USA member, Logan went 13-for-14
from the foul line and finished with 24 points for the Bearcats, who
out-rebounded the Pirates 44-30.
Cincinnati leads the all-time series 2-0.
