Pirates shanghaied in Boiling
Springs
From staff reports and
electronic dispatches
East Carolina visited an
out of the way neighborhood Tuesday night — and got mugged.
The Pirates, flying the
colors of one of college basketball's power leagues, sailed confidently
into the exotic port of Boiling Springs for a rare excursion onto the
homecourt of a lower mid-major conference foe and were ambushed,
bludgeoned, hijacked and plundered.
Tim Jennings scored a
career-high 20 points as Gardner-Webb of the Atlantic Sun Conference
beat ECU 90-60, the Bulldogs' first win against a Conference USA opponent.
The unexpected drubbing
was one that Pirate coach Bill Herrion won't soon forget.
"I'd like to apologize to
everyone who was at the game or listened to it on the radio," a
flabbergasted-sounding Herrion said in an interview aired
over the Pirate Sports Network after the game.
"I don't believe I've had
a game like this in 14 years as a head coach," Herrion said. "We got
outplayed, we got out-coached and we got out-scrapped."
Brian Bender and Simon
Conn led the Gardner-Webb assault with 18 points apiece.
East Carolina trailed by
41-31 at halftime, then went icy cold in the second half, making just
8-of-28 shots from the field and 1-of-10 from behind the 3-point line.
At the same time, the
Bulldogs (2-0) got hot, connecting on 7-of-11 3-point tries and making
53 percent of its shots from the floor to stretch their lead.
The Pirates (2-2) also
couldn't get a handle on the ball and turned the ball over 19 times to
just nine for Gardner-Webb.
Herrion was particularly
displeased with his team's failure to mount a challenge as the rout
materialized.
"What I'm concerned
about," he said, "when we got down 15 or 20, we stopped fighting ... Tonight was just very
disappointing."
Mike Cook led East
Carolina with 15 points before fouling out. He was 7-of-20 from the
field and made just 1-of-6 3-point attempts.
Corey Rouse had 13 points
and 11 boards.
ECU's next game is Sunday,
when the Pirates host Belmont Abbey at 4 p.m.
