Rouse records another double-double in loss

From staff reports

GREENVILLE — Tulane ended a three-game losing streak by outscoring East Carolina 37-23 in the second half for a 66-53 Conference USA basketball win in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday night.

It was the final home game of the season for ECU (8-18, 2-11 C-USA), which was led by 17 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Corey Rouse, his 15th double-double of the season.

"Naturally we are disappointed that we were not able to send our seniors out with a win, but give Tulane a lot of credit," said first-year Pirates coach Ricky Stokes. "I thought they played extremely hard.

"Corey Rouse is a big part of what we have done, he has had an outstanding year. Maybe we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to win the game for the seniors, instead of just relaxing and shooting the basketball."

The Pirates managed a 30-29 advantage at the half as Japhet McNeil's jumper completed an 11-0 ECU run. A 3-pointer by Chris Moore put Tulane ahead to stay with 12:44 remaining. That was part of a decisive 18-5 run by the Green Wave.

ECU Pirates struggled offensively as it made just 18 of 56 field goal attempts for 32.1 percent. Tulane (10-15, 5-7) connected on 24 of 46 from the floor for 52.2 percent and outrebounded the Pirates 40-28.

There was an even more pronounced difference in the shooting percentages for the second half when Tulane dropped 11 of 19 for 57.9 percent while the Pirates were eight of 29 for 27.6 percent.

David Gomez had 15 points for Tulane, Quincy Davis scored 13 and Ryan Williams added 11.

The Green Wave defense this season has held opponents to just 39.8 percent shooting, second in Conference USA and among the best in the nation. Tulane has held five opponents below 30-percent shooting and eight teams below 54 points.
