TAMPA — Freshman Frank Robinson scored 19 points and East Carolina snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 59-57 victory over South Florida on Tuesday night.

ECU's win ended its string of 20 straight C-USA road losses, a hex that started immediately upon the Pirates' entry into the league's powerful basketball alignment two seasons ago.

South Florida went on a 15-3 run in the final seven minutes, tying the game at 57. But Robinson hit a pair of free throws with 11.5 seconds left to close the scoring. Konimba Diarra's desperation shot at the buzzer missed the mark, sending the Bulls to their sixth straight loss.

Senior Derrick Wiley had 14 points and 11 rebounds for East Carolina (8-9, 1-7 Conference USA) and Erroyl Bing, also a senior, added 10 points and 10 rebounds. But it was first-year player Robinson, a guard out of Maine Central Institute, who provided the heroics at vital times for the Pirates.

Brian Swift scored 20 points for South Florida (6-11, 0-6), which is on its longest losing streak in five years. Bradley Mosley had 15 points for the Bulls. Gerrick Morris added 12 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots, and Terrence Leather had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Next up for ECU is a home game and a chance for payback against in-state conference rival Charlotte on Saturday at 7 p.m. The 49ers dispatched of the Pirates 81-65 on Jan. 10 in Charlotte.
