FAIRFAX, VA — Raoul Heinen
had career-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead George Mason to a
76-65 victory over East Carolina on Tuesday night, ending the Pirates'
three-game winning streak.
Heinen shot 9-for-14,
including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, and had four assists and a steal.
Lamar Butler scored 16 points for the Patriots (3-1), including three
consecutive 3-pointers that blew the game open in the second half.
For the game, GMU
connected on 11 of 23 from behind the arc.
Belton Rivers led East
Carolina (3-1) with 13 points. Erroyl Bing added 11 points and 14
rebounds. Rivers' back-to-back 3-pointers gave the Pirates a 56-49 lead
midway through the first half.
Butler answered with three
3-pointers to spark a 17-0 run for George Mason, giving the patriots a
66-56 lead with 4:19 left. The Pirates failed to make another field goal
until the final minute.
ECU hits its next road
stop on Saturday when it challenges another band of Pirates — Seton Hall
— at noon in East Rutherford, NJ.
