Though East Carolina administration officials have not talked about the precise details of the mission for which a high-profile consultant was hired, it was apparently a task which the university considered to be a pressing one — and one of vital enough importance to Pirate athletics to justify what is likely to be a hefty price tag for the services.

Gene Corrigan, one of the most respected figures on the NCAA landscape in recent decades, swooped into Greenville this week for a whirlwind round of one-on-one sessions with a formidable slate of prominent alumni and movers and shakers associated with ECU athletics, in addition to a series of meetings with key ECU employees.

The former president of the NCAA and commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, who also served stints as athletic director at Virginia and Notre Dame, was scheduled to conclude his visit to campus Wednesday with a private lunch with ECU alums Bob and Margaret Ward, according to knowledgeable sources.

Bob Ward is a former member of the university's Board of Trustees and the Wards are major donors to ECU causes. Among their philanthropic gestures was significant funding for construction of the Ward Building, named in their honor, which houses the staff of the school's department of athletics.

Others on Corrigan's rapid-paced meeting itinerary included a Who's Who of influential boosters and ECU employees in strategic positions, according to the sources, who indicated that Corrigan also conducted confidential sessions with the following individuals:

  • Charles Franklin, major supporter and current Chairman of the school's Board of Trustees.

  • Gene Rayfield, major supporter and immediate past Chairman of the Board of Trustees who served for two terms.

  • Dan Kinlaw, major supporter and current member of the Board of Trustees, including serving as chairman of the board's Athletic Committee.

  • Walter Williams, former member of the Board of Trustees who is a major supporter and former President of the Pirate Club after whom the school's basketball facility, Williams Arena, is named.

  • Bob Maynard, major supporter and current President of the East Carolina University Educational Foundation (Pirate Club).

  • Diane Murphrey, major supporter and immediate past President of the Pirate Club.

  • Dennis Young, current Executive Director of the Pirate Club.

  • Trenton Davis, ECU's Faculty Athletic Representative.

  • Rosie Thompson, Compliance Coordinator for ECU athletics.

  • Steve Logan, ECU's Head Football Coach.

  • Bill Herrion, ECU's Head Men's Basketball Coach.

  • Bill Carson, ECU's Head Track Coach.

  • Mike Hamrick, ECU's Director of Athletics.

  • Nick Floyd, ECU's Associate Athletic Director for Administration.

Corrigan, the sources said, may have also conducted meetings with one or two other individuals and is expected to submit a written report to ECU Chancellor William Muse by the end of next week.

Another source indicated that Muse is likely to clarify the purpose of Corrigan's visit in coming weeks.
