Neither snow nor sleet
could keep East Carolina pitcher Dustin Sasser from completing his
appointed rounds on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
It was the second straight
weekend Sasser (1-0) has endured inclement weather on the mound, but the
elements didn't prevent the sophomore southpaw from Pikeville from
earning his earned his first win of the season as ECU defeated College
of Charleston, 4-2.
The teams play again at 1
p.m. today, although ECU (4-1) is assured of taking the 3-game series by
virtue of Saturday's win couple with one on Friday. The Cougars won two
of three last season in Charleston.
Sasser went five innings
in his second start of the season, giving up two runs, one earned, on
eight hits while walking two and striking out three. Carter Harrell came
on and pitched three crucial scoreless innings, holding the lead for
Sasser, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Closer Kevin
Rhodes then came on in the ninth to close the door for his first save of
the season.
Lead-off man Dale
Mollenhauer was the lone Pirate with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with a
run scored. Stephen Batts picked up two RBI while Jake Smith, who
finished 1-for-4, had one RBI.
Each team committed four
errors as both teams struggled with the adverse conditions.
The Pirates started the
scoring early, plating a run in the first on a Smith sacrifice fly.
