A forecast of rainy
weather in the Hattiesburg, MS, area Sunday afternoon prompted officials
to shift the start time of the Conference USA baseball championship game
to 11 a.m. ET. The first pitch was originally set for 2 p.m.
Fifth-seeded Southern
Mississippi, the host of the event, and No. 2 seed Rice emerged as
winners of their
respective tournament brackets
on Friday and will vie for the title in a one-game winner-take-all
finale. [Editor's note: Rice defeated USM 8-6 Sunday afternoon to claim
the championship.)
As of 1:00 a.m. this
morning, the official National Weather Service forecast called for a
chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday morning with the probability
of showers increasing to likely in the afternoon with heavy rain
possible. The NWS forecasts the overall chance of rain on Sunday at 80
percent.
The NCAA Regional
selection process requires that the championship game be completed not
later than Sunday.
The game is scheduled to
be televised by CBS College Sports on a tape-delayed basis at 7:30 p.m.
ET.
Regular season champion
and No. 1 seed East Carolina
won its tournament opener
against eighth-seeded Central Florida on Wednesday, then was eliminated
after upset losses on Thursday
to Southern Miss and on Friday
to Tulane.
