WILSON  — East Carolina held a 4-2 lead over Wake Forest before a 98-minute rain delay at Fleming Stadium on Wednesday night.

When play resumed, the Demon Deacons rallied for a 5-4 win.

The nonconference matchup was halted after a play at the plate retired Wake's Nate Mondou to end the fifth inning.

Mondou had led off the bottom of the frame with a double to center field. He tried to score on a two-out single to left by Conor Keniry but Ben Fultz threw from left field to catcher Eric Tyler to save a run.

What should have been some valuable momentum for the Pirates seemed to dissolve as a cold front and showers moved through from the west.

Wake (12-6) pulled within a run in the sixth and took the lead with two runs in the seventh.

Ryan Williams (4-1) took the loss for the Pirates, pitching two and two-thirds innings after working three innings in a 6-5 home loss to UNC-Greensboro on Tuesday.

Williams yielded seven hits and three runs, two earned. Tyler Bolton started but did not return after the lengthy delay. Bolton allowed five hits and two unearned runs.

Jacob Wolfe came in to record a strikeout and end Wake's half of the eighth.

Bryce Harman's three-run homer off Deacons starter Matt Pirro in the first inning was the offensive highlight for ECU.

Designated hitter Charlie Morgan drove in the winning run for the Deacons with a single through the left side. Garrett Kelly worked two innings in relief and got the win.

ECU (8-9) starts a Conference USA series against Tulane at home on Friday at 6 p.m.
