Pirates find relief before C-USA wars

Stalwart performances from
freshmen forwards John Fields and Gabe Blair helped East Carolina halt
its seven-game losing streak with a 68-50 victory over Chowan Saturday
night in Greenville.
Fields and Blair each
recorded a double-double as ECU (5-8) prevailed in its final non-league
contest before setting out on a 16-game gauntlet of Conference USA
battles Wednesday night at Tulsa (8:05 p.m., CSTV.)
Fields produced career
highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Blair scored 10 points and
grabbed 14 rebounds. Junior guards Darrell Jenkins and Jeremy Ingram
also reached double figures for the Pirates, scoring 13 and 10 points,
respectively.
The outing marked an
impressive return to the court for Fields, who was sidelined the
previous three games by a shoulder injury.
Chowan (5-9) was led by
Jaleel Nelson's 12 points. Trayvon Lathan and Lando Morrison each added
11 points for the Hawks.
The win was ECU's first
since a 68-47 victory over N.C. Central on Nov. 26. The Pirates led at
the half, 35-26.
