Pirates run afoul in Hattiesburg

From staff and electronic reports

A 20-point deficit at the free throw line was more than enough to spell defeat for East Carolina Wednesday night as the Pirates fell to Conference USA foe Southern Miss 83-72 in Hattiesburg.

The Golden Eagles converted 27 of 39 shots from the charity stripe while the Pirates struggled to convert 7 of only 16 free throw opportunities, drastically skewing what otherwise might have been a different end result.

Craig Craft and Sai'Quon Stone scored 19 points apiece to pace USM, which improved its record to 13-5, 3-2 in C-USA. Stone recorded 17 of his points on 20 chances from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles had two other players in double figures, Jeremy Wise with 15 and Courtney Beasley with 12.

Junior guard Darrell Jenkins was 5-of-9 from three-point range and scored a game-high 25 points for ECU (5-13, 0-5 C-USA), which also got 20 points from senior guard Courtney Captain. Junior guard Cory Farmer added 10 points for the Pirates.

East Carolina outscored Southern Miss 39-18 from behind the arc, making 13 of 27 (48.1 percent) from long range while the Golden Eagles connected on 6 of 16 (37.5 percent.)

Jenkins and freshman forwards John Fields and Gabe Blair fouled out of the the game as ECU committed 29 fouls to USM's 20.

Jenkins' three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer sent the Pirates into the locker room trailing only 30-28, but Southern Miss outscored the Pirates 21-8 in the first 9:15 of the second half to take control of the contest.

East Carolina, which has lost five games in a row and 12 of its last 13, returns home for a C-USA battle with UAB on Saturday (7:00 p.m.)
