Pirates punchless in loss to UAB

East Carolina sputtered
through an eight-minute scoreless stretch in the first half and UAB
capitalized, building a comfortable margin and then cruising to a 58-42
Conference USA victory over the Pirates Saturday night in Greenville.
Guard Wen Mukubu scored 15
points and forward Lawrence Kinnard added 14 to help the Blazers improve
to 11-9 on the season, 3-3 in C-USA.
Senior guard Courtney
Captain recorded 13 points and junior guard Darrell Jenkins registered
10 for the Pirates (5-14, 0-6 C-USA).
An essentially nip and
tuck game took a decided turn for the worse for ECU after a
three-pointer by Jenkins at the 11:53 mark. The Pirates failed to
scratch for the next 8:24, opening the door for UAB to reel off 12
unanswered points and expand a 16-12 advantage to 28-12.
The Blazers led at
halftime 30-16. The Pirates' offensive production in the frame was the
team's lowest output in a half in more than two years.
ECU made a run in the
early minutes of the second half but could get no closer than five
before UAB regained the momentum for good.
East Carolina, which has
lost six in a row and 13 of its last 14, hits the road for a league
outing Wednesday at Marshall (7:00 p.m.)
