Knights gallop away in second half

From staff and electronic reports

Josh Peppers was the catalyst as Central Florida broke open a competitive game with 13 unanswered points midway through the second half, then cruised to a 67-49 Conference USA victory over East Carolina Wednesday night in Greenville.

Peppers, a senior forward, scored 24 points, including 14 after halftime, and sophomore guard Jermaine Taylor contributed 17 points as the Golden Knights improved their all-time record against the Pirates to 6-0.

Senior guard Courtney Captain led ECU with 15 points. Freshman forward John Fields recorded 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and junior guard Cory Farmer added 10 points for the Pirates.

UCF led at the half 29-26 and was still in a nip and tuck affair with 12:23 remaining after ECU freshman forward Gabe Blair's three-point play and a layup by Farmer closed the gap to 36-34.

Then the Knights asserted themselves, reeling off 13 straight points over the next 5:23 to build a comfortable 15-point lead and send the Pirates on the way to their ninth loss in a row and the 16th in their last 17 outings.

With the win, UCF improved to 17-6 overall, 6-3 in C-USA, while ECU dropped to 5-17 in all games, 0-9 in the league. The Pirates' last victory came on Jan. 6 over Chowan.

East Carolina's next shot at halting the skid will come Saturday when it plays at Houston (8 p.m.)
