No. 2 Memphis mauls Pirates

Freshman guard Derrick Rose scored 19 points to lead second-ranked Memphis to a 99-58 rout of East Carolina Wednesday night before a crowd of 17,308 at the FedEx Forum.

The Tigers improved to 14-0 with the victory — their 41st in a row at home — and extended their Conference USA winning streak to 24 games.

The game was the league opener for both teams.

Junior forward Robert Dozier added 13 points and 10 rebounds, senior guard Andre Allen scored 13 points and junior guard Chris Douglas-Roberts contributed 12 points for Memphis.

Senior guard Darrell Jenkins and sophomore forward John Fields, with 11 points apiece, were the only Pirates in double figures.

The Tigers built their margin from 4 points to 14 points over the final 5:50 of the first half, then dominated East Carolina 56-29 in the final frame to turn the contest into a blowout.

Memphis outshot the Pirates 46.2 percent to 36.2 percent and dominated the backboards 52-31.

East Carolina will have a week to recover from the trouncing before hosting Marshall next Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
