Pirates end skid at
Owls' expense

East Carolina halted its
four-game losing streak while extending Rice's string of bad outcomes to
11 in a row with a 64-45 Conference USA victory over the Owls Wednesday
night in Greenville.
Junior guard James Legan
scored 17 points and junior guard Sam Hinnant added 15 points as the
Pirates claimed their first win since a Jan. 16 home triumph over
Marshall.
Sophomore forward Gabe
Blair gathered 11 rebounds and contributed 9 points for East Carolina.
Junior guard Rodney Foster
with 11 points was the only Rice player in double figures.
The Owls scored the game's
first field goal and maintained the lead or a tie with the Pirates until
the middle of the first half.
Sophomore forward John
Fields sank a jump shot at the 10:01 mark to nudge East Carolina in
front and Hinnant followed with a three-pointer less than a minute later
to push the lead to 15-10. From that point on, Rice was in the Pirates'
rear-view mirror.
East Carolina, which led
at the half 33-21, improved to 8-12 overall, 2-5 in C-USA. The Owls fell
to 3-18, 0-8 in the league.
Next up for the Pirates is
a Saturday rematch with Marshall, this time on the road. The contest
tips off at 2 p.m. and is scheduled to be televised by CSTV.
