Tulsa overcame a
five-point halftime deficit, then countered a late East Carolina surge
to reclaim the lead in the final minute to defeat the Pirates 66-61
Wednesday night in Greenville.
Freshman guard Glenn
Andrews led the Golden Hurricane with 21 points, while his
backcourt mate, sophomore Ben Uzoh, recorded a double-double with 16
points and 10 rebounds.
Senior forward Calvin
Walls scored 13 points and 7-foot sophomore center Jerome Jordan had 12
rebounds for Tulsa, which out-rebounded East Carolina 45-33.
Walls scored the go-ahead
basket with 50 seconds remaining and added a pair of free throws 24
seconds later as the Golden Hurricane fended off the Pirates to seal the
victory.
Junior guard James Legan
scored 18 points, sophomore forward John Fields had 15 points and
sophomore forward Gabe Blair added 10 points for East Carolina.
The Golden Hurricane
improved to 12-10 overall, 4-6 in Conference USA, while the Pirates fell
to 8-14, 2-7 in the league.
The Pirates will remain at
home for a conference contest on Saturday against Southern Mississippi.
Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
