Senior forward Donnavan
Stith's two free throws with 4.4 seconds left lifted Tulane to a 77-75
win over East Carolina and guaranteed the Green Wave a second straight
winning season for the first time since 1996-97.
In the regular season
finale for both teams, East Carolina senior guard Cory Farmer's
three-point attempt at the buzzer missed, ending the Pirates' effort to
extend the three-game winning streak they brought into the matchup in
New Orleans.
The outcome of the
thriller nudged Tulane a notch ahead of ECU in the final Conference USA
Standings, sending the Green Wave to
next week's league tournament
(Mar. 12-15, FedEx Forum, Memphis) as the No. 9 seed and the Pirates as
the No. 10 seed.
Stith led Tulane with a
season-best 17 points. Senior forward David Gomez scored 21 points and
collected 16 rebounds for the Wave, while junior center Robinson Louisme
and sophomore guard Kevin Sims produced 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Senior guard Darrell
Jenkins tied an East Carolina record with eight three-pointers and
finished with a game-high 30 points. Junior guard Sam Hinnant added 15
points for the Pirates.
Tulane improved to
10-17, 4-10 in C-USA, while East Carolina finished the regular season
11-18, 5-11 in the league.
The Pirates are paired
against No. 7 seed Tulsa in the tournament's opening game on Wednesday
at 1 p.m., while Tulane will face No. 8 seed Marshall that evening at 6
p.m.
