Winthrop smacks Pirates

Michael Jenkins created
his own homecoming celebration of sorts in his team's road game at
Minges Coliseum Wednesday night.
Winthrop's stellar senior
guard, who played his prep basketball about 30 minutes from Greenville
at Kinston High School, scored 20 points to lead the Eagles to a 72-57
trouncing of East Carolina.
Jenkins made 8 of 14 shots
from the field, including 3 of 6 from three-point range, and added a
free throw as Winthrop bolted to a 35-22 halftime lead and cruised the
rest of the way to gain a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series between
the schools.
Senior forward Taj
McCullough had 18 points and a game-high 8 rebounds and senior guard
Chris Gaynor added 13 points for the Eagles.
Senior guard Cory Farmer,
with 10 points, was the only ECU player to crack double figures. Senior
guard Darrell Jenkins and freshman guard Jontae Sherrod each scored 8
points for the Pirates.
East Carolina hits the
road on Saturday to face George Mason (5:00 p.m., MASN).
