Junior guard James Legan scored a game-high 18 points, including a three-pointer with 1:05 remaining that gave East Carolina the lead for good in a stunning 68-65 victory over George Mason in the BB&T Classic Sunday night at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.

Senior guard Darrell Jenkins added 11 points and 10 assists for the Pirates, who won for the first time this season against a Division I opponent.

Going into the game, George Mason had victories over South Carolina, Kansas State and Dayton, among others, under its belt. The only blemish on the Patriots' record had been an 84-76 loss to Villanova on Nov. 23.

Senior guard Cory Farmer had 9 points and sophomore forward Gabe Blair and freshman guard Brock Young contributed 8 apiece for ECU. Blair hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds as the Pirates won the battle of the boards 38-37.

East Carolina (3-4) bolted to a 35-23 halftime lead and managed to retain its poise when the heavily-favored Patriots (6-2) wiped out the margin in the second half and surged ahead by as much as five with 7:38 left in the game.

The Pirates outscored GMU 16-8 down the stretch to seal the win.

George Mason got 16 points from junior guard Dre Smith, all in the second half. Senior forward Will Thomas had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore forward Louis Birdsong added 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Patriots.

East Carolina returns home for a Wednesday night matchup with Clemson at 7 p.m. (TV: CSS).
