Reserve big man Chad Wynn had the offensive game of his career, but it wasn't enough to save East Carolina from its otherwise miserable shooting performance in a 76-70 Conference USA loss to Rice Saturday afternoon in Houston.

With his teammates collectively making only 16 of 54 (29.6%) of their field goal attempts, Wynn, a 6-10 sophomore center, hit 9 of 10 (90%) from the floor and scored 21 points to help East Carolina (10-10, 2-5 C-USA) avoid incurring what might have been a more lopsided defeat.

Senior forward Aleks Perka scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, career highs in both categories, to help the Owls (7-14, 2-4) snap a four-game losing streak. Perka converted 10 of 15 field goal tries.

Junior guard Lawrence Ghoram had 15 points and freshman guard Connor Frizzelle and senior guard Rodney Foster added 12 apiece for Rice.

Senior guard Sam Hinnant scored 17 and freshman guard Brock Young added 11 for the Pirates.

The Owls, who never trailed, had a 10-point lead with less than a minute to go and led by as many as 19 in the first half. The halftime margin was trimmed to 44-37 as Wynn made four shots during a 14-0 run by East Carolina.

Rice won the rebounding battle 44-37.

The Pirates return home for a conference game with Southern Mississippi on Wednesday (7 pm). The Golden Eagles (13-7, 3-3) suffered an 87-75 loss at Texas-El Paso Saturday night despite a career-high 30 points by USM senior guard Courtney Beasley.
