East Carolina senior guard
Sam Hinnant unleashed a game-high 27 points but George Mason mustered
enough collective scoring punch of its own to shake off a halftime
deficit and slip past the Pirates 77-71 Saturday in Greenville.
Sophomore center Chad Wynn
scored 11 points and sophomore forward Jamar Abrams had a game-high 10
rebounds for ECU.
Junior forward Louis
Birdsong and freshman guard Andre Cornelius each produced 19 points to
lead GMU. The Patriots (3-1) also got double-figure scoring from senior
guard Dre Smith (12 points) and sophomore guard Cam Long (10 points).
The Pirates (3-1) led at
the half 39-38 and the teams traded leads for much of the second half.
With the score tied 66-66 with less than five minutes remaining, GMU
(3-1) went on a six-point run to gain the lead for good.
The Pirates were able to
cut the margin to 73-71 on a layup by freshman forward Darrius Morrow
with 19 seconds left before the Rams closed the scoring by converting
four free throws.
The Pirates host Virginia
Commonwealth on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Rams are 2-1 after suffering a
92-86 loss at Rhode Island on Saturday.
