Elijah Millsap, a 6-6 junior guard, scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds to help UAB weather a stiff challenge from East Carolina and claim a 76-68 victory in the Conference USA opener for both teams Wednesday night in Birmingham.

Junior guard Brock Young had 17 points and 7 assists, sophomore forward Darrius Morrow scored 15 points and junior forward Jamar Abrams had 13 points for the Pirates (6-9, 0-1 C-USA).

Junior guard Jamarr Sanders finished with 16 points and junior guard Aaron Johnson added 15 for the Blazers (13-2, 1-0).

East Carolina outshot the Blazers from the field 50 percent to 38.5 percent but was outrebounded 39-23.

The Pirates were also hot at the free throw line, converting 93.3 percent (14-15), an advantage that was more than canceled out by the 39 opportunities UAB enjoyed from the charity stripe. The Blazers made good on 30 of the chances for a 16-point swing.

East Carolina was whistled for 24 fouls while UAB committed only 13. The Pirates lost Morrow and junior center Chad Wynn to fouls.

East Carolina, which trailed at the half 36-33, spurted to a 39-36 lead by scoring the first six points after intermission.

UAB responded by reeling off 13 straight points for a 10-point advantage with 13:38 left and did not allow the Pirates to close the gap to less than 5 for the rest of the game.

East Carolina will return home and prepare for a Saturday matchup with another tough C-USA opponent in Marshall (12-2, 1-0). The Pirates and Thundering Herd, coming off a 76-63 Tuesday night win over Southern Miss, will tip of at 7 p.m.
