Culpepper torches Pirates

Junior guard Randy
Culpepper poured in 45 points, including 31 in a runaway first half, to
propel league-leading Texas-El Paso to a 100-76 Conference USA victory
over East Carolina Saturday night in the Don Haskins Center.
A game that was
competitive during the first few minutes — ECU led 16-15 at the 12:52
mark — quickly transformed into a rout as the Miners exploded for 13
unanswered points in two minutes.
After a basket by East
Carolina freshman guard Erin Straughn interrupted the barrage, UTEP
responded with another 15-0 run over the next three minutes.
Culpepper punctuated a
sensational first half performance by scoring his team's final 16 points
of the frame as the Miners built a 63-33 halftime advantage.
Straughn came off the
bench to pace East Carolina with 18 points on 7 of 10 from the field,
including 4 of 6 from behind the arc.
Junior guard Brock Young
had 13 points and freshman reserve guard Corvonn Gaines added 10 for the
Pirates (8-17, 2-9 C-USA).
Junior forward Derrick
Caracter supplemented Culpepper's production by contributing 13 points
for the Miners (19-5, 10-1 C-USA).
Culpepper put on a
shooting clinic on the night, making 14-18 field goal attempts,
including 9-12 from three-point range.
UTEP boosted its margin to
as much as 38 points on a three-pointer by Culpepper with 13:05 left in
the game.
The Pirates
returned to Greenville to spend the week before returning to Texas for
another league matchup next
Saturday at Rice (3 p.m.)
The Owls are in last place
in the conference standings, half a game behind ECU. Rice claimed its
only C-USA win when it
defeated the Pirates 69-58 on
Jan. 30 in Greenville.
