'Niners gang up on Pirates

A balanced attack,
including a 37-3 advantage in bench scoring, propelled Charlotte to an
80-68 victory over East Carolina Wednesday night in Halton Arena.
Senior point guard DiJuan
Harris scored 17 points, junior forward Shamari Spears had 12, junior
center Phil Jones added 10 and seven of their teammates — each recording
at least 11 minutes of playing time — contributed points to help the
49ers win the first matchup between the schools since Charlotte departed
Conference USA for the Atlantic 10 in 2005.
Junior guard Brock Young
scored 24 points, junior guard Jontae Sherrod added 13 and junior center
Chad Wynn contributed 10 for East Carolina (3-5).
The 49ers (5-1) led 46-33
at halftime. At other points in the game, they led by as much as 18
points in the first half and 19 points in the second frame.
Charlotte prevailed in
most statistical categories. An exception was the battle of the boards,
where East Carolina edged the 49ers 41-38.
The Pirates return home
where they will host Coker Saturday night at 7 p.m.
