ECU escapes D-II Knights

East Carolina outscored
upset-minded St. Andrews 6-1 in the final minute to pull out a 74-69
victory Saturday night in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
With the score knotted at
68, junior guard Brock Young began the Pirates' winning flurry with a
layup at the 57-second mark.
A jumper by junior guard
Jontae Sherrod with 16 seconds remaining and a pair of free throws by
junior forward Jamar Abrams with 4 seconds left were sandwiched a around
a single free throw by St. Andrews junior center Marcus Connor to
account for the final margin.
Sherrod scored 17 points,
sophomore forward Darrius Morrow had 15 and Young and Abrams added 14
apiece to lead the Pirates (5-6). Abrams was the game's top rebounder
with 10.
Junior forward Marvin
Jackson's 18 points led St. Andrews (5-4). Sophomore guard Kurt
Fenderbosch scored 15 and sophomore guards Aaron Christian and Antonio
Moffitt each scored 10 for the Division II Knights.
The teams were tied on
nine occasions, including a halftime score of 28-28.
East Carolina can improve
its record to .500 when it returns to action Tuesday in a home game
against George Washington. The Colonials, of the Atlantic 10 Conference,
are 9-2.
