Freshman forward Dwayne Smith's putback at the buzzer forced overtime and senior forward Damian Hollis's 9 points in the extra frame sealed the deal as George Washington edged East Carolina 84-80 Tuesday night in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

The heroics of Smith and Hollis enabled the Colonials (8-2) to escape the upset bid of ECU (5-7), which featured a balanced attack with five players in double figures.

Hollis scored a game-high 21 points, sophomore guard Tony Taylor added 20, Smith had 11 and sophomore forward Aaron Ware contributed 10 to help GW capture the first meeting between the schools since 1973.

Junior point guard Brock Young produced 20 points and 10 assists to lead the Pirates, while junior center Chad Wynn scored 17, junior forward Jamar Abrams had 15, junior guard Jontae Sherrod added 13 and sophomore forward Darrius Morrow contributed 10.

East Carolina led at the half 34-33. The game was knotted at 73 at the end of regulation.

The Pirates have a break in the schedule over Christmas before returning to action in a road game next Tuesday at Virginia Commonwealth (7 p.m.) The Rams are 6-2 heading into a Thursday night matchup with Tulane in New Orleans.
