Jontae Sherrod attacked
Tulane from short range, long range and the charity stripe on Saturday
to lead East Carolina to a 76-67 Conference USA win in its first game in
Williams Arena in more than a month.
The senior guard from
Tarboro, NC, scored a career-high and game-high 24 points, including a
pair of free throws with 1:25 left that broke a 66-66 tie and set off a
10-1 dash by the Pirates to salt away the victorious homecoming.
ECU's last home game was a
Dec. 7
non-league encounter with Old Dominion.
Tulane (12-5, 2-2 C-USA)
led by as much as 9 in the first frame and held a 31-28 advantage at
halftime, but East Carolina (9-7, 1-1) knotted the score 33-33 within
two minutes of the break and did not fall behind again.
Sherrod made 6 of 11 from
the field, including 3 of 6 from behind the arc, and converted 9 of 12
free throw opportunities. Junior forward Darrius Morrow added 14 points
for the Pirates.
Sophomore guard Jordan
Callahan scored 22 points, senior forward David Booker had 19 and
sophomore guard Kendall Timmons contributed 10 for the Green Wave.
The announced attendance, 5,211, far exceeded the previous season high of 4,358 that
attended the ECU-ODU clash and portends the potential for raucous crowds
as the Pirates host a pair of conference heavyweights next week.
East Carolina has a short
turnaround before it entertains UAB on Monday in a
makeup bout. A matchup between
the teams scheduled for last Wednesday
was postponed because of flight
disruptions resulting from the winter storm that struck the South
earlier in the week.
Two nights later, the
Pirates will face 22nd-ranked Central Florida in Williams Arena.
