Senior forward Jamar
Abrams and senior guard Jontae Sherrod combined for ten 3-pointers,
including Sherrod's decisive one in the final seconds, to lead East
Carolina to a 71-68 Conference USA victory over Rice Saturday night in
Houston.
Abrams and Sherrod each
connected on 5 of 9 from behind the arc, none of which was more
important than Sherrod's final one.
After junior forward Lucas
Kuipers nailed a three with 33 seconds remaining to pull the Owls even,
the Pirates played for the final shot. Senior guard Brock Young got the
ball to Sherrod deep on the left side for the winning trey with 2.3
seconds left.
A long-range hoist by Rice
senior guard Cory Pflieger banged off the rim as the game ended.
Abrams had 18 points to
lead East Carolina in scoring for the second game in a row. Sherrod
finished with 17 and sophomore guard Erin Straughn, who was 4-of-4 from
the floor and 3-of-3 from 3-point range, added 11.
As a team, the Pirates
made 24-of-50 field goal attempts, including 14-of-27 from 3-point land.
Sophomore guard Tamir
Jackson scored 18 points, Kuipers had 15 and sophomore forward Arsalan
Kazemi contributed 13 for Rice.
East Carolina led 43-33 at
the half and then spent the second half fending off surges by the Owls.
Rice came out of
intermission with a 12-2 run in the first 4:35 to knot the score 45-45.
The Pirates rebuilt the lead to as much as 9, but Rice fought back to
tie on two more occasions before Sherrod made the game's final basket.
The victory was East
Carolina's seventh in the league, bettering by two the most the program
recorded in any previous season since joining C-USA in 2001-02.
With two games left, the
win also locked in the
assurance that the Pirates will avoid a losing regular season for the first time
in 10 years.
The Pirates host Memphis
for Senior Night on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and conclude the regular season
Saturday at UAB (8 p.m.) A victory in either matchup will guarantee East
Carolina's first winning
basketball season since 1996-97.
