Back-to-back baskets by
Old Dominion senior forward Ben Finney ignited a 17-5 run in the game's
final six minutes that propelled Old Dominion to an 81-68 victory over
East Carolina Tuesday night in Greenville.
The Monarchs reeled off 11
straight points to launch the outburst, starting with Finney's
three-pointer with 6:03 left and his tip-in less than a minute later, to
break open a close game and put a damper on suspense in the game's final
minutes.
Junior guard Kent Bazemore
scored 20 points, Finney had 17 and senior guard Darius James added 13
to lead Old Dominion.
Senior forward Jamar
Abrams produced a game-high 22 points and junior forward Darrius Morrow
scored 14 to pace the Pirates.
East Carolina (7-3) led by
as much as 10 points in the first half before the Monarchs (6-2)
whittled the margin to 31-30 at halftime.
The victory was Old
Dominion's sixth in its last seven games and ended the Pirates'
five-game winning streak.
The Monarchs extended
their lead in the series between the former Colonial Athletic
Association rivals to 35-14.
East Carolina has an 11-day break in
the schedule before facing
five straight road games beginning with a contest at Coastal Carolina on
Saturday, Dec. 18th.
