GREENVILLE — Other schools in the region
have used the tactic with success for years, so East Carolina has decided to
give it a try. With the kickoff of football season less than a
month away, ECU officials have launched a campaign to sell an attractive
combo pack for tickets to half of the Pirates' home games.
Among the available selections are five of
the six games slated for Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in a season that will mark
the launch of John Thompson's head-coaching career.
If a bit of added impact is needed to
attract buyers, the 2003 campaign will feature what is perhaps the Pirates'
best-ever lineup of home opponents. The only contest off limits to combo
buyers is the Sept. 1 season opener against West Virginia.
Fans can purchase the three-game promotion
for $85, which will include one ticket to the North Carolina (Oct. 11) and
Southern Miss (Nov. 29) games and one ticket from either the Houston (Sept.
30), Louisville (Oct. 25) or South Florida (Nov. 8) games.
Tickets will be issued, based on
availability, for seat assignments throughout the upper-deck level of Dowdy-Ficklen
Stadium and may be ordered online at www.ecupirates.com or by calling the
ECU Athletic Ticket Office (252) 328-4500.
ECU Athletic Ticket Office summer hours are
Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Hamrick next up on UNLV's interview menu
Mike Hamrick, East Carolina's athletic
director since 1995, is about to take the next step in a process that could
mark the end of his official association with the Pirates and with
Conference USA.
Hamrick will fly to Las Vegas on Sunday and
spend the next two days interviewing for the vacant A.D. position at
Mountain West Conference member UNLV. He is one of three athletic directors
still in the running for the job, which became open when John Robinson
stepped down from the post to attend to family matters and focus on his job
as the Rebels head football coach.
The interview process will involve sessions
spread over Monday and Tuesday with UNLV president Carol Harter, members of
the school's A.D. search committee, faculty members, coaches and athletic
department staff members.
Hamrick, an alumnus of Marshall, worked in marketing and promotions at UNLV
in 1981 and 1982.
One candidate, Montana's Wayne Hogan interviewed for the job earlier this
week. Idaho's Mike Bohn is expected to interview next week, days before
Harter is expected to offer her recommended choice at the Aug. 14-15 UNLV
Board of Regents meeting in Reno.
The school originally targeted five
finalists for consideration, but Saint Louis athletic director Doug Woolard
and Toledo AD Mike O’Brien withdrew from consideration.
