If East Carolina plays any early-season
games in the rain, Friday's drills gave the Pirates a chance for some
real-life preparation. On-and-off rain and soggy conditions were factors as
the squad's returning players and rookies took part in the preseason camp's
first combined practice session.
The day's drills, which lasted 140 minutes,
included work on punt returns and PAT's as well as individual unit
preparations and a limited number of plays from scrimmage.
Little more than three weeks before his
debut as ECU's head coach in an ESPN-televised game at Cincinnati on
September 1, John Thompson said the day's cumulative performance included
positives and negatives, but noted the team had made some progress since
camp opened on Thursday.
"The weather kinda came and went and our
practice was like that, too," Thompson said. "We saw some real good things
and we also saw where we need a whole lot of work.
"That's where we are right now with 25 days
to go, but I see this team working and trying to get better. There was
improvement from yesterday. We have a long way to go, but we're going to get
there."
Day three of preseason practice begins
early on Saturday morning before the Pirates host the press in ECU's annual
Preseason Media Day. The team will also take its preseason photos before
spending Saturday afternoon in the meeting rooms.
According to the ECU Sports Information
Office, practices will remain open to the public for one more week.
Temporary bleacher seating has been set up
near the end zone of the practice fields for fans wish to attend. After Aug.
16, which happens to be the date of the annual Meet the Pirates extravaganza
for fans, all ECU practices will be closed to the public.
Tulane spices up game days with concerts
NEW ORLEANS — Tulane Athletics and Festival
Productions have joined forces to add punch, including live entertainment,
to the 2003 Green Wave football season.
The "Great to be Green" Pre-Game Bash, at
both the Louisiana Superdome and Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park, will
bring top New Orleans and national acts to the games, while improvements to
the Superdome tailgating accommodations and a Second Line parade by fans
into the stadium for the first game will produce a unique pre-game
atmosphere.
New concessions at Tad Gormley Stadium, and
the return of face-painting and inflatable games will add to the pre-game
activities for fans and pre-game and halftime entertainment will be provided
by area youths and marching bands.
Acts scheduled to appear include local
favorites the Radiators, the Dixie Cups, Rockin' Dopsie, the Rebirth Brass
Band, Marva Wright and Theresa Andersson.
A national name act will be added for the
game at Tad Gormley Stadium on Sept. 6th versus Northwestern State, which
kicks off at 7 p.m. That contest has been dubbed "Student Appreciation
Night" with special giveaways for Tulane students and a post-game fireworks
show.
The line-up for the Homecoming game October
11th versus Houston at Tad Gormley Stadium is in the final approval stages
and will be announced along with a complete listing of other
athletics-related Homecoming activities, including the Tulane Athletics Hall
of Fame activities.
Bands will begin playing as early as four
hours before game time depending on the contest, on specially-constructed
stages at the Superdome and at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Season tickets for the 2003 Tulane Football
season are still on sale, beginning at $140 for adults and $60 for youth, or
for $180 for a Family Pack of two adult and two youth tickets for all six
games. Individual game tickets start at $20.
Tickets can be purchased through all
Ticketmaster outlets and are available online at TulaneGreenWave.com and
from the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office.
