Defending Conference USA co-champion Texas
Christian has been on quite a football run in recent years, earning a long
string of annual postseason bids. But the return to action of the team's
most deadly offensive weapon has Horned Frogs fans thinking in terms of
bigger accomplishments — such as repeating the exploits of a storied past
when the program won or contended for national championships and featured a
pair of college football's most legendary quarterbacks.
Gunn started just four games last season.
That was enough of a preview for TCU to get excited about having him at
quarterback for three more years. Before torn ligaments in his right
knee ended his freshman season, Gunn completed 52-of-79 passes (66 percent)
for 608 yards and four touchdowns in his starts, all convincing wins in
which the Frogs averaged 41 points.
"Tye Gunn has a chance maybe to be one of
the best quarterbacks to ever play here," said third-year TCU coach Gary
Patterson. "You don't hear me say that out loud very often just for the
simple reason he's only started four games."
At the same time, Patterson wants to temper
expectations. After all, TCU did go on to a second 10-win season in three
years, the Conference USA title and a sixth straight bowl game without him.
And Gunn has played in just six games and is coming off surgery that limited
him to non-contact work last spring.
Fans, though, aren't containing their
optimism. When speaking to alumni groups this summer, Patterson heard plenty
of comparisons between Gunn and TCU shining stars of yesteryear: Slingin'
Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien, the school's only Heisman Trophy winner.
"I hope I don't disappoint them," Gunn
said. "But that's not a very fair comparison."
Perhaps Gunn can't be blamed for labeling
the expectations unrealistic. Texas Christian, which has a football heritage
unmatched by any other C-USA program except Army, won or claimed a share of
the national title in 1935 and 1938.
East Carolina, which defeated the Frogs the
last two years,
doesn't play them in 2003.
Tulane relents, sort of, to tailgate
chefs
For the first time since Tulane moved into
the Superdome in 1975, Green Wave fans will be able to add their own grilled
hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken or other delicacies to their tailgating menu —
but they still won't be able to bring their own grill.
Instead, the Green Wave and the Superdome
have teamed up to provide "Grillin' with the Green Wave" for all of the
team's home Superdome games in 2003.
Tulane fans are invited to bring their
favorite items for the grill and cook out on one of 25 grills that will be
set up next to the Tulane tailgating area on top of the Southwest parking
garage. For $50 per game, fans will have a reserved tailgating area, tables
and chairs, as well as the use of the grill. Spaces can be reserved by
calling Tulane Athletics Marketing at 504-865-5625.
"The ability to grill their own food is
something our fans have requested for years," said Tulane Associate Athletic
Director Scott Sidwell. "We're pleased to be able to work together with the
Superdome to provide this opportunity and think it will add even more of a
collegiate atmosphere to our pre-game tailgating experience."
Tulane fans provide the food and drink and
the Green Wave will supply the grills, which will be conveniently located
near all of the tailgating activities on top of the Southwest parking
garage. No personal grills will be allowed and concessions will still be
available.
East Carolina is one of the teams which
will be challenging the Wave on their new partially grill-friendly home
turf.
The Pirates are scheduled to challenge Tulane at
the Superdome on November 22.
