[ECU News Bureau] — East Carolina
University is expecting the most academically qualified freshman class in
its history when the fall semester begins this month.
Tom Powell, director of admissions, said
the average SAT score of the incoming class is expected to be 1050, an
all-time high for ECU. Last year's class had an average score of 1036.
Powell said the university has established
higher admissions standards. "We are attracting a higher-caliber student,"
he said. University officials are expecting about 3,400 first-time freshmen,
and a total enrollment, including distance-education students, of about
21,000. Last year's enrollment was 20,577.
The new academic year opens Aug. 25 with
the faculty convocation, and classes begin Aug. 27.
Ailing Schwab waits patiently for new lungs
[Marquette SID] — Almost five months after
he moved into the top spot on a regional transplant list, Marquette
University men's basketball assistant Trey Schwab is still waiting for the
set of donor lungs that he needs for a legitimate chance at long-term
survival.
Schwab, 39, was diagnosed in late 2001 with
idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable disease that impedes the body's
ability to process oxygen. He received the news that he was next in line to
receive a transplant in mid-March but hasn't yet received the call summoning
him to the University of Wisconsin Hospital, which is where the operation
will take place.
"They told me the guy in front of me was at
the top spot for 11 1/2 months, but they helped me get ready for that by
saying that even though I'm moving up, it's not that we're doing that many
transplants," Schwab said. "With me being a fairly rare blood type
(A-positive), we knew there was going to be a wait."
As young as Schwab is, the optimal
situation would be for a pair of lungs to become available from an
individual of similar age. Once that happens, Schwab will be notified and
immediately make his way to Madison so doctors can prepare him for the
surgery.
Schwab continues to work out on a treadmill
five days a week even though his lung capacity has dropped to around 28%.
He'll return to Madison in November for another round of testing with his
team of doctors.
Calipari picked for UNICO's Lombardi Award
[Memphis SID] — University of Memphis
basketball coach John Calipari will receive the Lombardi Award from UNICO
National Friday as part of an awards luncheon during the organization's
annual convention being held this week in San Antonio, TX.
UNICO was founded in 1922 to provide
scholarships to worthy students and to give strength and force in fighting
discrimination against Italian-Americans. The name translated from Italian
means "one" or "only." The letters are an acronym for Unity, Neighborliness,
Integrity, Charity and Opportunity."
UNICO raises over $2 million annually for
charity and its local chapters have focused on awarding scholarships to high
school seniors. The Lombardi Award recognizes an outstanding individual of
Italian-American heritage who is involved in athletics. Previous award
winners include Tommy Lasorda, Mario Andretti, Jim Valvano and Mike Fratello.
