Multi-platinum recording artist and country music
legend Charlie Daniels is scheduled to sing the national anthem at Friday
night’s Southern Miss–Memphis game at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at
6:30 p.m. CT.
Daniels, a native of Wilmington, NC, is a renowned vocalist, guitarist,
songwriter and fiddler who has produced a number of mega-hits over the

It Again.”
Tickets for the three-game series were still

SouthernMiss.com website.
3rd time around for
Houston assistant coach
HOUSTON — Former University of Houston basketball
player George Walker is returning for his third stint as assistant coach.
Walker will join the staff of new coach Tom Penders. He also worked with
Houston coach Guy Lewis from 1980 to 1986, and Clyde Drexler from 1998 to
2000.
"I am excited about returning to help out Tom in my third go-around," he
said. "This is something new and something fresh, and I'm glad to be a part
of it."
Walker played 129 games during his four-year career, finishing with 1,107
points and 691 rebounds.
Huggins inks juco backcourt wizard
CINCINNATI — Jihad Muhammad, a 5-11, 180-pound point
guard from San Jacinto Junior College in Texas, has signed a national letter
of intent to play basketball at Cincinnati.
Bearcats coach Bob Huggins announced this week that
Muhammad will join a crop of newcomers that includes freshment Vincent Banks
of Laurinburg (NC) Prep) and Roy Bright of Durham (NC) Mt. Zion Academy).
A native of Plainfield, NJ, Muhammad earned
second-team NJCAA All-American honors and was the Region XIV Player of the
Year after averaging 16.8 points and 5.6 assists this past season while
leading San Jacinto to a 27-4 record. He also averaged 2.5 three-pointers
per game and shot 86 percent from the free throw line.
“Jihad will give us a true point guard which will
enable us to get into our offense, and he will be the point person for us
defensively because he can guard the ball,” said Huggins. “Jihad is similar
to some of our outstanding point guards in the past in that he is a scoring
point guard.”
As a freshman two years ago, Muhammad averaged a
team-best 16.5 points per game while earning the Small Player Award (6-0 and
under) at the National Tournament after leading San Jacinto to the national
championship game.
Muhammad was ranked the nation's top junior college
point guard this past season by The Sporting News and No. 2 by
Hoopmasters.com.
