After scoring 60 runs as a team in a weekend road
sweep of Cincinnati, it came as no surprise when one of East Carolina's
players was selected for the second week in a row for a piece of one of
Conference USA's weekly awards.
ECU's Jamie Paige shares the league's Hitter of the
Week honor with UAB's Daniel Hill for the period ending that ended Sunday,
the league office announced Monday, while Saint Louis' Dave Guntorius was
named Pitcher of the Week.
Paige picked up the mantle from teammate Ryan
Norwood, who earned a share of last week's accolade for batters.
HITTERS OF THE WEEK
JAMIE PAIGE, EAST CAROLINA, Senior, OF, Greenville:
Paige hit .588 (10-for-17), including eight runs scored, to lead the Pirates
to a series sweep at Cincinnati. In Saturday’s 32-14 victory over the
Bearcats, he set school and conference records for hits (7) and doubles (4)
in a single game. For the week, Paige posted a .632 on-base percentage and
an .824 slugging percentage.
DANIEL HILL, UAB, Senior, 1B, Pleasant Grove, AL:
Hill batted .421 (8-for-19) in four games last week, including two victories
over No. 7 Tulane. He went 2-for-5 with two homers, two runs scored and tied
a career-high with five RBI in UAB’s 11-3 upset over the Green Wave. He
finished the week with 20 total bases for a 1.053 slugging percentage, while
posting a .476 on-base percentage. Hill posted three home runs, three
doubles and 10 RBI on the week, while scoring four runs.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
DAVE GUNTORIUS, SAINT LOUIS, Senior, RHP, St.
Charles, MO: Guntorius earned his first save of the season with two
scoreless innings of relief against Southeast Missouri, while also
collecting a win against Houston. In the Billikens’ first victory over the
Cougars since 1998, he gave up only one earned run and struck out five in a
career-high nine innings pitched. He finished the week with a 0.82 ERA,
while striking seven.
WNBA beckons ECU's Willis for tryout
East Carolina senior Courtney Willis will have a
chance to elevate her basketball-playing career to the professional level.
According to an ECU announcement, Willis has been
invited to participate in the Los Angeles Sparks Invitational Tryouts on
April 19-20 inside Gersten Pavilion in hopes of landing a spot on the
two-time WNBA Champions roster.
The 6-2 center led the Lady Pirates to back-to-back
Conference USA Tournament appearances and became the first Lady Pirate in
school history to earn first-team all-conference honors.
Based on a statement from her coach, Willis's
audition for the Sparks may not be the only chance she will have to impress
a pro team.
"I am very excited for the opportunity that Courtney
has to be invited to several WNBA camps and especially with LA," said ECU
women's coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener.
Willis, a Fayetteville native, scored 1,374 career
points in 102 career games and collected 22 career double-doubles, 67
double-digit point games, and 22 double-digit rebound games.
Pirates mount assault on baseball polls
East Carolina rocketed up the rankings
in both polls after a week in which it swept three games from Cincinnati,
scoring 60 runs in the process. The Pirates cracked Baseball America's Top
10, advancing from No. 15 the previous week, while leaping 12 spots to No.
16 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
Following are the top 25 teams in the
Baseball America poll and the Top 30 teams in the Collegiate Baseball poll, with records through Apr. 18 and previous rankings.
The Baseball America poll is voted on by the publication's staff. The
Collegiate Baseball poll, which includes each team's point total, is voted
on by coaches, sports writers and sports information directors:
