Conversations about seventh-ranked East Carolina's
prospects for lofty placement in the baseball postseason have progressed
from enthusiastic speculation among fans to a matter of serious discourse
from the school's athletic department.
In anticipation of a possible selection as one of 16
regional host institutions for the 2004 NCAA Baseball Championships, ECU
officials announced Tuesday that pre-orders will be accepted from baseball
season ticket holders and Pirate Club members at the Buccaneer Level and
above through May 12.
The university will partner with the City of
Kinston, the Kinston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Kinston Indians
to submit a bid to host a regional June 4-6.
ECU will also team with the City of Wilson and the
Wilson Tobs to offer a proposal to host a super regional June 11-13.
Pre-orders will be for all-session tickets only and
can only be made on-line at
www.ecupirates.com, according to the ECU announcement. Ticket orders
will be assigned based upon postseason ticket distribution guidelines,
posted on-line.
Qualified groups and individuals will receive
applications through the mail.
If tickets remain after the May 12 priority deadline
has passed, all Pirate Club members will have the opportunity to pre-order
all-session tickets.
A block of tickets will also be held for ECU
students. Should ECU students or teams invited to participate in the
regional not purchase their entire allotment, remaining tickets will be put
on sale to the general public just prior to the tournament.
Regional sites will be announced on Sunday, May 30.
C-USA baseball tourney
hooks up with sponsor
HOUSTON - Sterling Bank has agreed to serve as the
sponsor for the 2004 Conference USA Baseball Tournament, hosted by the
University of Houston at Cougar Field, officials with the UH Department of
Athletics have announced.
The 2004 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
presented by Sterling Bank begins at 9 a.m., Wednesday, May 26 and wraps up
with the championship game at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 30.
Fans can purchase tournament tickets by calling
713-GO COOGS. All-session booklets with reserved seating are available for
$50, while general admission seating will cost $40.
Single-day tickets will be available for $15 for
reserved seating, $10 for general admission and $5 for youth general
admission. Youth is defined as all students 18 years old and younger or
students at participating C-USA schools with valid IDs.
Single-day tickets will not be available for
purchase until May 26 and will be based on availability.
The Cougars will continue their uphill quest for the
C-USA regular-season championship when they travel to Greenville for a
three-game series with league-leading East Carolina this weekend.
Both polls agree: Pirates are
Top 10 material
East Carolina, which last week cracked
Baseball America's Top 10 poll, finally convinced Collegiate Baseball to pay
a similar level of respect. After a week in which they extended their
winning streak to 16 game by winning a tough road game at N.C. State and
sweeping a three-game Conference USA series at home against Louisville, the
Pirates moved up from 9th to 7th in the Baseball America list and vaulted
from No. 16 to No. 9 in the Collegiate Baseball rankings.
Following are the top 25 teams in the
Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls, with records through Apr.
25 and previous rankings.
The Baseball America poll is voted on by the publication's staff. The
Collegiate Baseball poll, which includes each team's point total, is voted
on by coaches, sports writers and sports information directors:
