Junior college backcourt player Dwayne Shackleford
has signed a letter of intent with the University of Southern California,
the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Shackleford was also recruited by East Carolina, which signed the Allegany
(MD) College point guard's teammate,
6-8 power forward Mike Castro,
during the fall signing period.
"We feel Dwayne's maturity level and winning mentality will provide
on-the-court leadership to the team," said Trojan coach Henry Bibby in the
AP account.
As a sophomore last season, Shackleford, a 5-foot-10, 185-pounder, averaged
21.4 points. He was named an NJCAA Division I All-American after leading the
team to its 17th Region XX championship.
Shackleford attended Anacostia High in Washington, D.C.
The Trojans' successful courting of Shackleford away from ECU was payback of
sorts. The Pirates recently landed
6-7 Jonathan Hart of Roselle (NJ)
Abraham Clark High School just as USC's interest in the high-scoring
swingman was heating up.
Cards, Bulls, Pirates
pace league's free agents
A total of 19 former Conference USA players signed
free agent contracts in the 48 hours following the conclusion of last
weekend's National Football League draft. Louisville and South Florida had
the most free agent signings with four, followed by
East Carolina with three.
The aspiring Sunday afternoon stars will attend NFL
mini-camps, with some team camps opening today and others being conducted
over the next two weeks.

UNM gives Louie and Lucie Lobo
job security
ALBUQUERQUE — University of New Mexico athletic
director Rudy Davalos has muzzled the idea of using a live animal as a
mascot during Lobo home football games next season.
The school had brought a canine mascot in for the Cherry-Silver spring game
on April 10. The animal was not an actual wolf, as was previously suggested,
but a domesticated hybrid.
Davalos said he never was privy to the discussions the school's marketing
department had about using the animal.
"They did that for the spring game without going through me," he said. "It
should've been cleared with me, and it wasn't. It no longer will be a
subject of discussion."
Davalos said he's happy with costumed mascots Louie and Lucy Lobo.
Davalos lauded the marketing department for its imagination in coming up
with the idea, saying its only mistake was not consulting him.
Lobos marketing director Joe Weiss had said the school received only
positive feedback after putting the animal in the northwest concourse during
the spring game.
But UNM received a number of e-mails in protest after news reports last week
that the school was considering using the mascot. Davalos met with the
marketing and athletic departments after receiving the e-mails.
