With thunderstorms in the forecast for Greenville on Sunday, East Carolina and Houston have agreed to advance the first pitch of their Conference USA baseball game to 11 a.m. in an effort to beat the weather.

The game, which was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., had already been changed by mutual agreement to noon.

ECU defeated the Cougars in the first two-games of a three-game weekend series at Harrington Field. The Pirates extended their winning streak to 18 with an 11-10 victory on Friday and a 5-3 triumph on Saturday.

An announcement on the official website of Pirate athletics noted that today's game will mark Senior Day for 7th-ranked and C-USA leader ECU.

Stairway to Division I made shorter

FARGO, ND — The NCAA Management Council has approved a plan to reduce the probationary period for schools reclassifying to Division I athletics, North Dakota State athletic director Gene Taylor said last week.

Both South Dakota State University and NDSU are making the jump to Division I in the fall.

The plan would reduce to five years the probationary period, during which a school is ineligible for postseason play. It currently is 13 years for men's basketball and seven years for all other sports.

``This takes away a huge barrier,'' said SDSU athletic director Fred Oien. ``I think this will allow us to move much quicker.''

The measure will be forwarded to the NCAA Board of Directors this summer. Its approval is considered a formality because it did not receive opposition at the Management Council level.

If it gains final approval, the only hurdle left for SDSU and NDSU in their transition from Division II to Division I will be to find a conference. Taylor said both schools needed the waiting period to be reduced before a league would seriously consider them.

The lengthy waiting period is aimed at preventing a large number of small colleges from going Division I simply to get a share of basketball tournament money.

Politicians takes sides in Illini mascot feud

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Champaign Republican state Sen. Rick Winkel says it is a mistake for legislators to force action on the Chief Illiniwek issue.

State Senate President Emil Jones, a Democrat from Chicago, says the University of Illinois trustees should get rid of the mascot before the Legislature adjourns at the end of May. Otherwise, he says lawmakers may cut the university's budget.

Jones says people who support Chief Illiniwek are the same type of people who supported segregation 50 years ago.

But Winkel says the process of whether to remove the mascot should move forward without political interference.

Chief Illiniwek is a student who dresses in an Indian costume and dances at University of Illinois sports events.

Some American Indians complain that the character is demeaning.
