Hard-hitting R.J. corrals 2nd C-USA award
After helping red-hot East Carolina to another
Conference USA sweep, Pirates outfielder Ryan Jones has been named Hitter of
the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Pitcher of the Week honors went to Derek Hankins of
Memphis, his third award this season.
HITTER OF THE WEEK
RYAN JONES, EAST CAROLINA, Senior, OF, Gibsonia, PA:
Jones hit .545 (6-for-11) against Houston last weekend, helping East
Carolina to its fifth straight C-USA sweep. He slugged 1.545 and had a .643
on-base percentage. Jones had two doubles, three home runs and drove in
seven, while scoring six times in the series. He hit his 17th and 18th home
runs of the season in the series finale on Sunday. This is the second time
this year that Jones has been named Hitter of the Week.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
DEREK HANKINS, MEMPHIS, Junior, RHP, Altamont, IL:
Hankins picks up his third C-USA Pitcher of the Week award of the season
after throwing a complete-game shutout, the first of his career, against No.
13 Tulane on Sunday. He scattered six hits and struck out seven, while
walking just two. Hankins’ shutout was the first by a Tiger pitcher against
Tulane in 56 all-time meetings.
Ascension of
Pirates continues
East Carolina's weekend sweep of a
highly-regarded Houston team added fuel to the Pirates' relentless drive
towards the top of the national collegiate baseball pecking order.
During the course of a school and
Conference USA record 19-game winning streak and a C-USA record 17-game run
in league contests, ECU has steadily marched from a remote spot somewhere
outside the rankings to No. 6 in both the Baseball America and Collegiate
Baseball polls. Last week, the Pirates were ranked 7th by the former and 9th
by latter.
Following are the top 25 teams in the
Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls, with records through May 2 and previous rankings.
The Baseball America poll is voted on by the publication's staff. The
Collegiate Baseball poll, which includes each team's point total, is voted
on by coaches, sports writers and sports information directors:
