CATS AND DOGS

Fresno State beat No. 13 Kansas State 45-21 Saturday in its biggest win ever over a ranked team — and the Wildcats' worst regular-season nonconference loss in 13 years. The Bulldogs' 45 points were the most given up by Kansas State in a regular-season, non-conference game since a 56-3 loss to Washington in 1991. Fresno State's previous most decisive win over a ranked team was a 44-24 defeat of Oregon State, then ranked 10th, in 2001.

TURNAROUND

Notre Dame defeated No. 8 Michigan 28-20 Saturday to earn its first win over a top-10 team since beating the Wolverines, then ranked fifth, 25-23 two years ago. Freshman Darius Walker had two fourth-quarter touchdowns and ran for 115 yards on 31 carries - the first Irish freshman to rush for more than 100 yards since Julius Jones had 146 yards against Navy in 1999.

SLIM MARGIN

Mike Nugent's 55-yard field goal as time expired gave Ohio State a 24-21 victory over Marshall on Saturday. The ninth-ranked Buckeyes have won 13 of their last 14 games by a touchdown or less over the last two-plus seasons, including a 7-0 record while winning the national championship in 2002.

RAINING CHAMPS

Florida won its hurricane-delayed season opener in the rain, routing Eastern Michigan 49-10. Hurricane Frances forced postponement of the No. 11 Gators' scheduled season opener against Middle Tennessee State last week, and Saturday's starting time was moved up five hours to 1 p.m. because of approaching Hurricane Ivan.

SAFETY DANCE

No. 21 Wisconsin used two safeties to help hold off UNLV 18-3 Saturday. The Badgers hadn't recorded two safeties in a game since 1951 and they're the first Big Ten team to do it since Minnesota had two at Indiana in 1981. The first came on a high snap out of the end zone on a punt by UNLV and the second on linebacker Mark Zalewski's sack in the end zone.

ESCAPING LINCOLN

Southern Mississippi became the first non-conference opponent since Washington in 1991 to win at Memorial Stadium, beating Nebraska 21-17 Saturday. The Huskers, who are 102-7 at Memorial Stadium since 1988, had not lost to an unranked opponent at home since a 20-16 defeat by Texas in 1998.

HABIT FORMING

Marquis Weeks returned a kickoff 100 yards against North Carolina for the second time in three years to give No. 15 Virginia a 56-24 win Saturday. His school record-tying, 100-yard kickoff return sparked the Cavaliers' 37-27 come-from-behind victory over the Tar Heels two years ago.

North Carolina Central's 26-23 victory over Delaware State on Saturday featured six lead changes, five of them in the fourth quarter. It took the Eagles 23 seconds to drive 66 yards in four plays for the winning score — Adrian Warren's 19-yard touchdown pass to Torey Ross with 11 seconds left. ... Todd Mortensen threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Langdon with two seconds to play, capping a wild fourth quarter in San Diego's 37-31 win over Holy Cross. The teams combined for four touchdowns in the final three minutes.

RECORD BREAKERS

No. 25 Purdue's Kyle Orton completed 23 of 26 passes — a school-record 88.5 percent — in a 59-7 win over Ball State on Saturday. Orton also threw for a career-high five touchdowns and ran for another.

SNAPPED

UCLA snapped a six-game losing streak with a 35-17 win over Illinois on Saturday. Drew Olson threw three touchdown passes and Maurice Drew rushed for 142 yards to help end a string of losses dating back to Nov. 1. ... Virginia Tech snapped a four-game losing streak with a 63-0 win over Western Michigan. The Hokies last lost four straight came when they dropped games to Virginia and Tennessee to end the 1994 season and to Boston College and Cincinnati to open the 1995 season.

STREAKING

Texas A&M won its 17th straight home opener with a 31-0 rout of Wyoming on Saturday. Reggie McNeal threw for 298 yards, including an 84-yard touchdown to freshman Kerry Franks, and ran for another score to help the Aggies bounce back from a 20-point loss at Utah to open the season. ... Louisville beat Army 52-21 Saturday to extend the Black Knights' losing streak to 16 straight games, going back to 2002.

SPEAKING

"We are still at the main table. We were all in. We picked up all their chips, and now we've got a bigger pile — and next week we'll go all in again." - Fresno State coach Pat Hill, using a poker metaphor to describe his team's 45-21 upset of No. 13 Kansas State on Saturday. The victory was the Bulldogs' second victory over a team from a Bowl Championship Series conference in seven days - and their seventh since the BCS was established in 1999.
