College career over for inured UAB star Eddins
UAB has lost Demario Eddins — its team
leader and best player — for the remainder of the season.
The senior forward suffered a tear of
his right Achilles' tendon in UAB's 68-62 win over Virginia Commonwealth
Monday night, effectively ending his prolific career with the Blazers.
"This is a tremendous blow to our
basketball program and our basketball family, but more importantly to
Demario," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said in a press release. "He is a
four-year starter and was one of the foundation-laying members of the
resurgence of UAB basketball over the last four seasons."
Eddins established himself firmly in
the UAB record books, scoring 1,241 points, grabbing 511 rebounds, dishing
251 assists and swiping 177 steals in 111 career games.
He ranks 11th on UAB's all-time scoring
and rebounding lists, 20th in scoring average, fifth with 333 free throws
made, third with 480 free-throw attempts, sixth in steals and third in games
started with 101.
Eddins is only the second Blazer ever
to record over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists and 175 steals.
The Chicago native will undergo surgery
to repair the tear at UAB Hospital on Wednesday. Team physician Dr. Bill
Garth will perform the operation. Recovery time for a torn Achilles' tendon
is approximately six months.
From a
UAB Athletics release.
