Kickoff return nets C-USA honor for Johnson

East Carolina junior Chris Johnson was named Conference USA special teams player of the week for his play against Southern Miss on Saturday in the Pirates' 20-17 overtime win, according to a release from ECU's athletic media relations office.

Johnson, a native of Orlando, FL, recorded a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter to give ECU an early 10-7 lead. The return, which was the longest of his career, ranks as the sixth-longest in school history and longest since 1994 when Mitchell Galloway returned one for 97 yards against Tulsa on Oct. 22, 1994. It was also the first return for a score since Nov. 1, 2003 when Damarcus Fox ran one back 94 yards against Memphis.

In all, Johnson averaged 58 yards per kickoff return during the contest (2 for 116) and compiled 142 all-purpose yards, including 2 for 20 receiving and 2 for 26 rushing.

Johnson becomes the third Pirate this season to capture C-USA weekly honors following Kasey Ross (Sept. 18) and Ryan Dougherty (Oct. 9).

Joining Johnson as players-of-the-week were Tulane quarterback Lester Ricard (offense) and Tulsa linebacker Chris Chamberlain (defense).

The Pirates will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Orlando, FL, to take on Central Florida at 4 p.m. (EST) at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Pirate volleyball streaks to school record

The East Carolina volleyball team won its eighth straight match, sweeping Central Florida 3-0 (30-25, 30-12, 30-21) Sunday afternoon in Minges Coliseum in the Pirates final home match of 2006, according to an ECU athletic media relations release.

The Pirates are now 18-9, 9-4 in C-USA, with just three regular season matches remaining on the schedule. UCF drops to 5-17, 1-11 in C-USA action. The Pirates set a new school record for consecutive matches won.

Kelley Wernert paced the Pirates with 14 kills and four digs. Jaime Bevan and Stephanie Turner led ECU defensively with seven digs each. Bevan added five kills and five blocks on the day. Mignon Dubenion was one kills shy of double figures, finishing the day with nine, and adding five blocks. Heidi Krug dished out 32 assists, three service aces and four blocks.

ECU out hit the Golden Knights .282-.054, recording 45 kills to the Golden Eagles' 31. East Carolina tallied 11 total blocks in the match.

The Pirates will finish the 2006 regular season on the road, as ECU plays its final three matches away from Minges Coliseum. ECU travels to Birmingham, AL, for a 7 p.m. match against UAB on Friday, Nov. 3. From there, the Pirates will play at Memphis on Sunday, Nov. 5, and will close out the regular season at Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Mountaineers on fringe of national title picture

The hills of West Virginia are alive with anticipation this week, and it's not just because the West Virginia Mountaineers are only three days from their long-awaited Big East football showdown with Louisville.

This week's Bowl Championship Series standings show WVU (7-0) at No. 3, up a spot from last week following then-No. 3 Southern California's 33-31 loss Saturday at Oregon State. No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Michigan held their spots, according to a USA Today report by Jack Carey.

The anticipation is likely just as keen in Louisville, where the Cardinals jumped three spots to No. 5. Neither WVU nor Louisville played this weekend. Florida, which beat Georgia on Saturday, is fourth in the standings.

The winner of Thursday's Louisville-WVU game could be in position to play for the national championship Jan. 8 in Glendale, AZ, because Ohio State and Michigan have to play each other Nov. 18 when the Big Ten title and a trip to Glendale figure to be on the line.

There appears to be a possibility, however, that if the Buckeyes lose that game, they could drop only one spot, setting up a rematch with the Wolverines for the national title.

West Virginia, which has steamrolled most of its opponents, endured perhaps its more competitive matchup this season when it prevailed over East Carolina, 27-10, in Greenville on Sept. 23.
