Sam Houston State's Bobby
Verbick delivered a two-out, game-winning single in the bottom of the
11th as the Bearkats overcame an early deficit to defeat Southern Miss,
12-11, in Oxford, MS, Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles
were eliminated from the NCAA baseball regional hosted by Ole Miss.
Southern Miss (39-23) led 7-1
after six and a half innings.
Campbell names Link defensive coordinator
Campbell football coach Dale
Steele has announced the hiring of Art Link, a former assistant coach
and player at Florida, as defensive coordinator for the Fighting Camels.
In addition to his defensive coordinator duties, Link will coach the
Camels' defensive backs.
Link joins the Camels after
spending last season as the defensive coordinator at Catholic University
of America, an NCAA Division III school in Washington, DC.
The Camels are resuming their
football program in 2008.
Stanford, USC's Lovemark win NCAA golf titles
Stanford's golf team captured to
the NCAA championship at the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course in
Williamsburg, VA. The Cardinal finished at 11-under-par 1109, 12 shots
ahead of Georgia.
Jamie Lovemark of Southern
California fired a final-round, six-under par 64 to win the individual
title at nine-under, 271.

Wolfpack postponed in
Columbia regional
All of Saturday’s baseball games
in the NCAA Columbia (SC) regional were postponed to Sunday because of
inclement weather.
While it was only drizzling
early in the afternoon, the area was expected to get heavy rains from
the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, prompting NCAA officials to make
the decision to wait another day to get started.
Second-seeded N.C. State will
play Wofford at 11 a.m. today at Sarge Frye Stadium on the South
Carolina campus, followed by a 3 p.m. contest between top-seeded South
Carolina and third-seeded Charlotte. The winner of the first game will
play the loser of the second game at 7 p.m.
The final games of the regional
will be played Monday at a time that will be determined after Sunday’s
game.

delivers for alma mater, Louisiana Tech
Louisiana Tech Bulldog
basketball coach Kerry Rupp has finalized his staff with the addition of
Karl Malone as director of basketball promotions and Cody Fueger as
director of basketball operations.
Malone, who donated $350,000 to
Tech's athletic department in conjunction with his hiring, and Fueger
join associate head coach Nikita Johnson and assistants Rennie Bailey
and Curtis Condie on the Bulldogs staff.
SEC won't push
for Division I-A football playoff
Florida president Bernie Machen
has abandoned his call for a Division I-A football national championship
playoff, according to a report by David Climer of the Nashville
Tennessean.
Machen said he was "done" after
the 12 presidents of Southeastern Conference schools discussed the
current Bowl Championship Series and Machen's playoff proposal for one
hour on the final day of the SEC spring meeting in Destin, FL.
Machen, whose Gators won the
national championship by beating Ohio State in the BCS title game in
January, had spent the last five months crusading for change in the BCS
system.
He left Friday's meeting
convinced that the SEC will pursue tweaks in the system when the current
BCS contract expires in 2010.

Hargreaves joins
East Carolina football staff
Vernon Hargreaves has been named
defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator at East Carolina, ECU
head coach Skip Holtz announced Friday.
Hargreaves’ appointment with the
Pirates will mark a reunion with Holtz as the pair worked together for
four seasons at Connecticut (1994-97) when Holtz was was the Huskies
head coach. Hargreaves left UConn in 1997 to accept a position on the
Miami (FL) staff.

Hargreaves’ assignment to handle
ECU’s ends, coupled with Donnie Thompson’s recent departure, has enabled
Holtz to realign other staff positions on the defensive side of the
ball.
Former outside linebackers coach
Rock Roggeman will take over responsibility for the defensive tackles
while defensive coordinator Greg Hudson, who handled middle linebacking
play in 2006, will now guide all three linebacker slots.
Holtz also announced the
promotion of secondary coach Rick Smith to the assistant head coaching
position.
In addition to his defensive
duties, Hargreaves will also assume the special teams coordinator’s role
formerly held by Don Yanowsky.
Paper: Grant in
the mix for Gators hoops job
Miami native Anthony Grant, a
former Florida assistant under Billy Donovan whose Virginia Commonwealth
team upset Duke in the NCAA Tournament in March, is a likely contender
for the Gators job, according to the Miami Herald. Larry Shyatt,
Donovan's lead assistant last season, is a former head coach at Clemson.
Tulsa's
Korbe shares Byron Nelson honor
The Golf Coaches Association of
America has announced that Tulsa golfer Sam Korbe and Roberto Castro of
Georgia Tech are recipients of the 2007 Byron Nelson Award.
Candidates for the award are
graduating seniors who exemplify outstanding performance throughout
their career in academics and golf.
Korbe recently received his
undergraduate degree and is planning on furthering his education by
attending medical school at the University of Oklahoma. He completed his
career at Tulsa with a 3.74 grade point average in biochemistry.
On the golf course, Korbe has
maintained a 72.6 stroke average and has placed among the top-20 in
eight tournaments this season, including five top-5 performances.
He was a second-team
all-Conference USA selection and was one of three Tulsa golfers selected
to the five-member C-USA All-Academic team.
